Which massage to choose

Sport massage vs classic massage

Both massages relieve muscle tension, and both cost the same. The difference is in the goal and the tools. Sport massage works deeper and focuses on specific problem areas, while classic massage is about relaxing the whole body.

Sport massage vs classic massage

The short answer

Choose sport massage when something specific bothers you: a stiff back, sore legs after training, a shoulder that does not move freely. Choose classic massage when your main goal is to switch off, reduce stress and feel relaxed from head to toe.

What happens in a sport massage

In a sport massage I start by asking what you feel and where, and then check how you move. Most of the session goes to the areas that need it. I work through the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, and add tools when they are useful: cupping, IASTM, myofascial release or trigger point work. Some moments can feel intense, but it should never be painful. You tell me, and I change the pressure.

What happens in a classic massage

A classic massage follows a steady, calm rhythm over the back, neck, shoulders, arms and legs. The aim is not to dig into one problem but to help your whole body let go. It can help with tension from stress, poor sleep or a long week, and many people simply enjoy it as regular self-care.

Which one should you book?

  • You train regularly and your legs or back feel heavy: sport massage. See also massage for sore muscles after training.
  • You sit all day and your neck and shoulders are tight: sport massage if there are clear knots and stiffness, classic if it is mostly general tension.
  • You feel stressed, tired or sleep badly: classic massage.
  • It is your first massage and you are a little nervous: classic massage is a gentle place to start. You can try sport massage next time.
  • You are recovering from a minor sports injury: sport massage, and tell me about it when you book.
  • You cannot decide: book a sport massage and tell me what you prefer. The pressure and pace can always be adjusted, so it can become as gentle as you need.

Can I switch from one to the other during the session?

Yes, to a degree. If you booked a sport massage and feel you need something calmer that day, I can slow down and use lighter, longer strokes. If you booked a classic massage and I find a very tight spot, I can spend a few extra minutes on it with more pressure, if you are comfortable with that.

Is sport massage only for athletes?

No. Many of my sport massage clients do not compete at all. They sit at a desk, carry children, garden or go to the gym twice a week. If something feels stiff, sore or restricted, sport massage is a good fit whatever your activity level.

Which one is better before a race or competition?

A few days before an important event, I keep the work lighter whichever massage you book, so your legs feel fresh rather than worked. Deep sport massage fits better in normal training weeks or after the event, once you have had a day or two to recover.
